Even more on Florida and welfare

Never take me at my word, folks. Always do the research for yourself.

When I started posting about the idea of states requiring drug testing for welfare recipients, it was more of a gripe about blind Facebook chain-posting than about the issue itself. But the issue has been a hot topic, and it's come up again, this time directly from Florida.

The Tampa Tribune is reporting that, after Florida's testing requirement a whopping 2 percent (TWO) of welfare applicants have tested positive. Some 96 percent were drug-free, leaving the state (and therefore the taxpayers) on the hook for paying for those tests. Some cost savings, eh?

Meanwhile, a 2008 study by the Office of National Drug Control Policy showed that 8.13 percent of all Floridians age 12 and up use illegal drugs.

So... we can conclude logically that this whole mess has been an exercise in political posturing, waste and scapegoating. But why be logical, right?
